A gunman opened fire on a crowded street in Sydney on Sunday, injuring at least 20 people before being detained, according to Australian police.

Authorities reported that the suspect indiscriminately targeted passing vehicles, including police cars, in a chaotic scene that sent shockwaves through the city. Stephen Barry of New South Wales Police said between 50 and 100 shots were fired during the incident.

Police arrested a man in his sixties two hours later at an apartment complex. The suspect was taken to the hospital with injuries sustained during his arrest.

Incidents of this nature are exceptionally rare in Australia. Following a 1996 mass shooting in Tasmania that claimed 35 lives, the country implemented strict gun control laws, banning automatic and semi-automatic firearms.

The investigation is ongoing as police continue to determine the motive behind the attack and assess the condition of the injured.
