At least 20 people have tragically lost their lives after a boat capsized in the Lukeni River in the Kutu area of the Mai-Ndombe province, located in the southwestern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The incident occurred late Saturday night into Sunday morning, according to local authorities on Tuesday.
The wooden boat, equipped with a motor, was reportedly carrying around 300 passengers along with goods, far exceeding its capacity.
The vessel sank after colliding with logs near a fishing village about 600 kilometers northeast of the capital, Kinshasa.
Local official Jacques Nzenza confirmed that 20 bodies have been recovered so far, and search operations are ongoing to locate the missing passengers.
The overloading of boats is a common issue in the region, often leading to such devastating accidents.
