Two women were killed and several others injured on Thursday when an Israeli airstrike hit the Catholic Church compound in Gaza City, according to doctors at Al-Ahli Hospital.
The strike caused significant damage to the Church of the Holy Family, the only Catholic church in the Palestinian enclave. Medical sources confirmed that six people sustained serious injuries.
Among the wounded was Father Gabriel Romanelli, the parish priest of the church, who suffered a minor leg injury. Father Romanelli is known for his regular communications with the late Pope Francis, keeping him informed of the situation in Gaza throughout the ongoing conflict.
The Italian news agency ANSA reported the incident, highlighting growing concerns over the safety of religious sites and civilians amid the intensifying violence in the Gaza Strip.
There has been no immediate comment from the Israeli military on the strike.
