Two people were killed and several others injured in a shooting at the campus of Brown University in the United States, according to American police and local officials.
Police said multiple individuals were wounded in the shooting, which took place at the prestigious university located in Providence, the capital of Rhode Island.
Authorities urged residents to shelter in place and avoid the area until further notice.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said during a press conference, “I can confirm the deaths of two people, and there are eight others in critical condition.”
He added that no shooter is currently in custody.
U.S. President Donald Trump said in a post on the social media platform Truth Social that he had been briefed on the incident and that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is conducting an investigation at the scene.
Trump says he’s been “fully briefed” on the Brown University shooting and tells Americans to “pray for the victims.”
He also falsely claimed the shooter was already in custody.

Although Trump initially stated that a suspect had been arrested, he later clarified that police had retracted their earlier statement, confirming that the suspect is not in custody.
The motives behind the shooting remain unclear at the time of writing.
Law enforcement agencies described the suspect as a man dressed entirely in black. Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara said, “We are using all available resources to locate the suspect.”
Authorities reported that the gunman was last seen leaving the building, noting that no weapon has yet been recovered.
The investigation is ongoing.
