Two people have died as severe storms swept across parts of Sweden, Norway, and Finland, causing widespread power outages and disrupting air travel in affected areas.
The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute issued warnings for strong and violent winds across large areas of northern Sweden as Storm Johannes moved through the region.
Reports indicate a man in his 50s died near the Kungsberget ski resort in central Sweden after a tree fell on him. He was transported to hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Separately, a regional company reported the death of an employee who was trapped under a fallen tree, according to Swedish broadcaster SVT.
In Finland, more than 120,000 homes lost electricity due to the storm, with western regions hardest hit, according to Finland’s public broadcasting service. In Sweden, over 40,000 households were affected by power outages, the Swedish news agency TT reported.
Strong winds also disrupted flights at Kittilä Airport in northern Finland, where aircraft were pushed against snowdrifts on the runways. No injuries were reported from the aviation disruptions.
