A US military airstrike targeting a suspected drug-smuggling vessel in the eastern Pacific Ocean has killed two people, according to the US military.
The operation was reported Monday by the German Press Agency.
The US Southern Command said the two men were killed in what it described as a “lethal strike” against a vessel allegedly operating along known narcotics trafficking routes and engaged in drug smuggling activities.
The strike is part of an escalating US campaign against maritime drug trafficking networks across the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific.
Over recent months, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly ordered military operations targeting suspected smuggling boats as part of efforts to curb cross-border drug trafficking.
Critics argue that such lethal operations in international waters may violate international law. According to official figures, more than 160 people have been killed in similar strikes to date.
The US military has defended the operations as necessary measures to disrupt transnational criminal organizations operating at sea.
