The US Southern Command announced on Friday that it carried out a strike on a suspected drug-smuggling vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing two individuals.
According to the military, intelligence confirmed that the vessel was operating along known drug-trafficking routes and was involved in narcotics smuggling.
In a statement on X, SOUTHCOM said: “On 5 February, under the direction of US Southern Command Commander General Francis L. Donovan, Joint Task Force South spearheaded a lethal military strike on a vessel linked to designated terrorist organisations.
Intelligence confirmed that the ship was travelling established drug-smuggling routes in the eastern Pacific and was engaged in narcotics trafficking. Two terrorists were killed in the operation, with no injuries reported among US military personnel.”
The US Southern Command also released video footage documenting the moment the suspected smuggling vessel was targeted in the eastern Pacific.
