Two people were killed when a single-engine plane crashed shortly after takeoff from a small airport east of Atlanta on Saturday night, according to US authorities.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the aircraft, a Rockwell Commander, went down near Covington Municipal Airport at about 11:40 PM. Officials confirmed that both individuals on board perished in the crash.
Local police stated that there was no further communication with the aircraft after takeoff.
Responding officers discovered the wreckage and the victims in a wooded area north of the runway in Newton County, about 35 miles (55 km) east of downtown Atlanta.
Authorities are working to identify the victims, while the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
