At least two people have been killed after two trains collided near Jakarta late Monday, according to Indonesia’s state railway operator, as emergency crews continue rescue efforts.

The crash occurred near Bekasi Timur station, around 25 kilometers east of the capital, in a busy commuter area. Officials from Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) confirmed the fatalities based on hospital records, while noting that the situation remains under assessment.

Emergency teams, including firefighters, military units and national search and rescue personnel, were deployed to evacuate passengers and transport the injured to nearby hospitals. Local media footage showed ambulances arriving at the scene as paramedics carried victims on stretchers.

Authorities said efforts were focused on ensuring rapid medical response and securing the site, while investigators began gathering evidence to determine the cause of the collision. A detailed account of the incident is expected to be released later.

The accident highlights ongoing safety concerns in Indonesia’s transport sector, where infrastructure limitations and maintenance challenges have contributed to recurring incidents. A major rail crash in West Java in January 2024 killed four crew members and injured around 20 people.
