A deadly avalanche on Switzerland’s iconic Eiger Mountain has claimed the lives of two people and left five others injured, according to Swiss police reports released on Sunday.

The incident occurred while a group of eight individuals were on a ski tour in the alpine region near the summit, which rises to nearly 4,000 meters above sea level.

Authorities confirmed that one person died at the scene, while another was resuscitated but later succumbed to injuries at the hospital.

The avalanche struck in the Bernese Alps, overlooking the popular tourist resorts of Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen.

Emergency responders were quick to reach the scene, and all injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals. The police are currently working to confirm the identities of the deceased.

Eiger, known for its dramatic north face and treacherous climbing routes, is a prominent destination for skiers and mountaineers. While the cause of the avalanche is still under investigation, Swiss authorities regularly warn of the risks associated with backcountry skiing during the spring thaw.
