The fatalities occurred in Querétaro, Mexico, where officials reported that both victims were swept away by rainwaters late Friday night.

According to the state’s Civil Protection Agency, the bodies were discovered just before midnight in an area that suffered extensive damage.

Torrential rain continued into Saturday, affecting Querétaro city, the state capital known for its colonial architecture, and forcing federal authorities to activate a military aid plan.

In Mexico City, operations at Benito Juárez International Airport, one of the busiest in Latin America, were briefly suspended due to reduced visibility caused by the storms.

Mexico has experienced unusually intense rainfall this year, particularly in the capital. June was the third wettest month recorded since 1985, according to the National Water Commission (Conagua).

Scientists warn that climate change is contributing to increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events worldwide, with heavier downpours and prolonged storm patterns becoming more common.
