Two people were killed and a third injured in a shooting at a residential complex affiliated with South Carolina State University in the United States, university officials confirmed on Thursday.

In a press statement, the university said it has not yet confirmed the identities of the victims or disclosed the condition of the injured individual, according to the Associated Press.

A campus-wide lockdown was imposed at approximately 9:15 p.m. local time at the university in Orangeburg after reports of gunfire. The security alert remained in effect for about four hours while law enforcement officers secured the area.

Investigators were deployed to the scene as campus police and local authorities conducted patrols across the university grounds and surrounding neighborhoods.

The university cancelled classes on Friday and announced that counselling services would be made available to students in response to the incident.

South Carolina State University, which has an enrollment of around 2,800 students, has previously experienced two other shooting incidents, including one at the same student housing complex, resulting in one death and one injury.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
