Two people were killed after a small aircraft crashed into a residential area in southwestern Germany near the town of Limburgerhof, south of Mannheim.

Police confirmed there were no immediate reports of injuries among local residents, although the identities of the victims have not yet been released.

According to authorities, the aircraft went down shortly before 11:30am local time on land at the edge of the town.

Emergency officials said debris from the plane was scattered across a large area surrounding the crash site, prompting security forces to cordon off the area while rescue and investigation teams worked at the scene.

Authorities also established a support center for local residents as criminal investigators launched an inquiry into the cause of the crash.

A police helicopter was deployed to capture aerial images of the area as part of the ongoing investigation.

Limburgerhof, located in Rhineland-Palatinate, is home to a major agricultural research center operated by BASF, one of the world’s largest chemical manufacturers.
