Two people have died after a helicopter crashed onto a cargo barge in the Mississippi River near the state of Illinois, according to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA confirmed that the crash occurred earlier today and involved a civilian helicopter that went down during a flight over the river. The victims were both on board the aircraft at the time of the incident.

Corporal Dallas Thompson of the Highway Patrol reported that there were no additional injuries or casualties on the barge or in the surrounding area.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, with federal aviation authorities working to determine what led to the fatal incident. Emergency response teams arrived quickly at the scene to secure the area and begin recovery operations.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to release further details following the completion of their initial inquiry.
