Two people were killed on Wednesday after two small planes collided mid-air at Marana Regional Airport, located on the outskirts of Tucson, Arizona.

According to federal aviation safety investigators, each aircraft had two occupants at the time of the crash. One of the planes, a Cessna 172, managed to land safely, while the other, a Lancair 360 MKII, crashed near a runway and caught fire.

Marana Regional Airport features two intersecting runways but lacks a control tower, meaning pilots must rely on radio communication to announce their intentions for landing and takeoff.

Investigators are now examining whether communication or visibility issues contributed to the fatal crash.

The Arizona crash is the latest in a series of aviation incidents across North America. Just two days prior, a Delta Airlines plane overturned on the runway at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Additionally, over a week ago, a plane crash in Scottsdale, Arizona, killed a pilot and injured another.

Last month, the US witnessed multiple major air disasters, including a passenger plane crash in Alaska and the worst aviation tragedy in the country since 2001.

That incident involved a collision between an American Airlines jet and a US Army helicopter in Washington, D.C., killing 67 people.
