Two members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were killed and three others injured in clashes with armed dissidents in the western province of Kurdistan, Iranian state media reported on Tuesday.
According to a statement released by the IRGC and published by the IRNA news agency, the confrontation took place in the Sarvabad district during an exchange of fire between what it described as opponents of the revolution and IRGC forces.
The reason behind the clashes has not yet been disclosed, with officials saying further details will be announced at a later time.
The province of Kurdistan has witnessed repeated attacks by armed groups in recent years, largely driven by ongoing religious and regional tensions. The area remains one of Iran’s most volatile regions, where security forces frequently clash with separatist and opposition factions.
The Iranian authorities have intensified their military presence across western provinces in an effort to contain unrest and prevent cross-border incursions from militant groups operating near the frontier with Iraq.
