Two men were taken to hospital following a shooting in the Bexleyheath area of south-east London in the early hours of Sunday, prompting police to close a major road and launch an urgent investigation.
Emergency services were called to Broadway, Bexleyheath, shortly after 2am following reports of gunfire. Officers from the Metropolitan Police attended the scene alongside paramedics from the London Ambulance Service.
Police said a 30-year-old man was treated at the scene for a gunshot wound before being taken to hospital. His condition has not yet been formally confirmed. A second man, aged 35, was detained at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and was also taken to hospital after sustaining injuries.
London’s air ambulance was deployed, with specialist trauma teams treating both casualties at the scene before their transfer to hospital. A police cordon was put in place, and traffic was restricted while forensic and investigative work continued.
In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said they received the report at 2:15am on Sunday, January 4, and confirmed that inquiries are ongoing. Officers have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward by calling 101 and quoting reference number CAD 630/04Jan.
Broadway in Bexleyheath is a busy commercial area, home to the Broadway Shopping Centre, which attracts between eight and nine million visitors each year. Several surrounding roads were closed as a result of the incident, and multiple bus routes were diverted.
According to local media, one of the injured men was treated at the scene for a gunshot wound, while the other received treatment for a head injury before being taken to hospital.
A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said crews were dispatched at 2:10am, including ambulances, rapid response units and a specialist trauma team from the air ambulance service. Both patients were treated at the scene and later transported to hospital.
