A powerful explosion early Sunday morning in northern Philadelphia killed one person and injured two others, causing significant structural damage to several homes, according to US authorities.
The Philadelphia Fire Department responded to an emergency call just before 5:00 AM, reporting a suspected explosion in a residential area. Fire officials confirmed that the blast severely damaged at least five houses, with some structures partially collapsing due to the force of the incident.
Daniel McCarty, Executive Director of the department, stated that firefighters rescued two individuals who were immediately transported to a nearby hospital. One of the victims is in critical condition, while the other is reported to be stable.
McCarty emphasized that the safety of the surrounding homes is now the primary concern, noting that emergency crews are working to secure the area and prevent any further danger. He described the response as a prolonged operation that would continue throughout the day.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the explosion. An investigation is underway to identify the source and assess the extent of the damage.
