Japanese police reported on Tuesday that an avalanche in Hokkaido, northern Japan, resulted in the deaths of two individuals, identified as New Zealand citizens.

According to a statement by the police relayed by the Kyodo News Agency, 33-year-old Joshua Salinz, a guide residing in Kutchan, and 21-year-old Isabella Bolton were among a group of backcountry skiers on Mount Yotei, which stands at 1,898 meters and spans towns including Kutchan and Niseko.

The avalanche also injured three individuals from the six-person group on the mountain's northern slope, just above the midpoint.

One of the injured is suffering from shoulder pain, as per the local police report.
