A residential fire in South Korea has killed two people and injured six others, according to local authorities, in an incident that broke out in a high-rise apartment complex south of the capital Seoul.

The fire occurred on Thursday morning in the city of Uiwang, located just south of Seoul, the Yonhap News Agency reported, citing emergency officials.

Authorities said the blaze started around 10:30 a.m. on the 14th floor of a 20-storey residential building. Firefighters brought the fire under control roughly two hours after it began.

A man in his 60s died after falling from the building during the incident, while his wife, a woman in her 50s, was later found dead inside their apartment.

Police also reported discovering what is believed to be a suicide note at the scene, though investigations are still ongoing.

Six other residents suffered minor injuries, mainly from smoke inhalation, and were treated at nearby medical facilities.

Authorities have launched a joint investigation involving police and fire services to determine the exact cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the couple’s deaths, as concerns over high-rise residential safety continue to grow in urban areas of South Korea.
