Authorities in Indonesia have reported that severe landslides triggered by heavy rainfall on Java Island have claimed two lives and left 21 people missing, as rescue teams continue to search for those unaccounted for.
Officials stated that several days of intense rain in Central Java Province caused landslides that damaged dozens of homes across three villages on Thursday evening.
Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Agency, said the unstable ground posed significant challenges for rescue teams working to locate victims during the so-called “golden hour.”
Despite these obstacles, joint rescue teams resumed search operations on Friday morning, deploying heavy machinery to accelerate the process. Footage released by the agency showed rescuers carefully searching through rubble for victims trapped under collapsed homes.
Seasonal heavy rains, which occur between October and March, frequently cause flooding and landslides across Indonesia. In January, more than 20 people died after floods and landslides swept through Central Java following intense rainfall.
