Two people were killed and twelve others injured in a mass shooting in downtown Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, on Saturday night, according to US police reports.

Authorities said the gunfire broke out when several armed individuals opened fire on each other in a crowded area of the city’s entertainment district shortly after a football game between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College, as reported by the Montgomery Advertiser.

Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys said that three of the injured victims were taken to hospital with life-threatening wounds following what was described as a mass shooting.

Police confirmed that the shooters showed no regard for public safety while firing into the crowd. Investigators were collecting evidence and interviewing possible suspects early Sunday morning, though no arrests or charges had been announced at the time.

Graboys said the department would continue to gather all available evidence to ensure that everyone involved is held accountable.
