Severe storms in southern Switzerland have caused a significant landslide, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and leaving one person missing.
The landslide also caused the collapse of a bridge over a small river, according to local police reports on Sunday.
Authorities detailed that the landslide occurred in the Fontana area of the Maggia Valley, near the city of Locarno.
The police statement confirmed the recovery of two bodies, with efforts underway to identify them, while rescue teams continue searching for the missing person.
The storms, accompanied by heavy rainfall, hit southern and western Switzerland on Saturday and continued into the night.
The hardest-hit areas were in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, located on the southern side of the Alps.
Campgrounds along the Maggia River were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Additionally, part of the Visletto road bridge collapsed, cutting off access to three other valleys in the region.
The damage to infrastructure has complicated rescue and recovery operations, highlighting the severity of the storm's impact.
Further north, the Rhône River overflowed its banks in several areas within the canton of Valais.
The flooding disrupted a major highway and a railway line, causing significant transportation delays and raising concerns about further damage.
