At least 19 people have tragically lost their lives, with 7 others injured due to lightning strikes in Bihar state, eastern India, as reported by state-run All India Radio on Saturday.
The region was hit by heavy rains and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning strikes over the past 24 hours, affecting 10 districts.
Most of the victims were either working outdoors or seeking shelter under trees during the rain when lightning struck the area.
India's Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for the next 24 hours, predicting heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning strikes in northern, southeastern, and central southern parts of Bihar.
Every year, with the onset of the monsoon season, hundreds of lives are tragically claimed by lightning strikes in India.
