Cyclone Fengal has tragically claimed the lives of at least 19 people in India and Sri Lanka, wreaking havoc as it crossed the southern coast of India from the Bay of Bengal on Saturday.

The powerful storm has caused severe flooding in the Tamil Nadu state and the Puducherry region, leaving behind a trail of devastation.

The Indian Meteorological Department reported on Sunday that Puducherry experienced the heaviest rainfall in 30 years, with intense downpours over 24 hours.

The cyclone also flooded parts of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. Airport authorities temporarily suspended flights from the city on Saturday due to the storm but resumed operations early on Sunday morning.

Local media released footage showing strong winds and heavy rainfall that inundated streets, with rescue teams using boats to assist stranded residents.

The Indian Army is coordinating relief operations in Puducherry, where the cyclone's impact has been most severe, while rainfall in Chennai has begun to ease.

In neighboring Sri Lanka, the disaster management center in Colombo reported that 16 people had died due to the storm.

Torrential rains have also caused damage to over 138,000 homes, leaving many residents displaced and in urgent need of assistance.
