The death toll from the passenger plane accident has risen to 18, a senior Indian government official said today, Saturday, adding that 16 others were seriously injured.
An Air India Express plane, which was carrying Indians returning home after being stranded in Dubai due to Coronavirus, passed the runway of Calicut International Airport during heavy rain near the city of Kozhikode on Friday, Reuters reported.
The accident is the worst in India since 2010. The plane was carrying 190 passengers in addition to its crew.
K Gopalakrishnan, chief of the Malappuram district in the southern state of Kerala, told Reuters, that The plane’s pilot and the co-pilot were killed in the accident.
“Only an investigation would reveal the cause of the crash,” Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri last night told national broadcaster DD News.
Puri revealed that most of the passengers were rescued because the plane did not catch fire while descending the slope at the end of the runway.
