At least 18 people have been killed in a tragic collision between a passenger bus and a truck in northern India early Wednesday morning, according to Indian police reports.

Arvind Chaurasia, a senior police officer, confirmed the accident occurred on a highway in the Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh, about 500 kilometers southeast of Delhi. The collision also resulted in at least 19 injuries.

The bus was en route to New Delhi from the eastern state of Bihar. Chaurasia mentioned that police are still working to confirm the exact number of passengers on the bus at the time of the accident.

Road accidents are a frequent occurrence in India, often due to overloading, poor road conditions, and reckless driving.

The country has one of the highest road accident rates globally, leading to numerous fatalities and injuries each year.
