At least 18 people have been killed, and 11 others remain missing following severe flooding in Benguela, central Angola, after rising waters from the Cavaco River inundated large parts of the city.
Local authorities reported that the disaster has destroyed at least 451 homes and displaced around 20,000 residents, underscoring the scale of the humanitarian crisis.
The flooding was triggered after a protective barrier along the left bank of the Cavaco River collapsed on Sunday due to heavy rainfall, unleashing unprecedented water levels that submerged multiple neighborhoods.
Emergency teams continue search and rescue operations as officials assess the full extent of the damage and deliver aid to affected communities.
Historical records indicate that the Cavaco River has experienced repeated flooding in 1979, 1983, 2002, and 2015, causing widespread destruction, loss of life, and damage to agricultural land.
