At least 17 migrants have been found dead and seven others rescued in a complex maritime operation off the eastern coast of Libya, underscoring the ongoing dangers of irregular migration routes across the Mediterranean.
According to the Libyan Red Crescent, naval coast guard units recovered the bodies and rescued survivors from a stranded vessel that had been adrift for eight days off the coast near the city of Tobruk.
The operation, carried out by a patrol boat affiliated with a local naval base, lasted approximately eight hours under difficult conditions. Rescue teams provided emergency medical assistance and humanitarian support to the survivors.
Authorities have not disclosed the nationalities of the migrants or further details بشأن their identities.
The Red Crescent said the response was conducted in coordination with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, highlighting continued international efforts to address the humanitarian challenges linked to migration in the region.
The incident reflects the persistent risks faced by migrants attempting perilous sea crossings, as instability and limited opportunities drive thousands to undertake dangerous journeys in search of safety or better living conditions.
