At least 17 people have died after gunmen attacked a village in central Nigeria, according to local officials and residents.
The assault took place in Mbalom, located in the Gwer East area of Benue State, a region frequently affected by violence tied to disputes between farmers and herders over land and resources. The area has also seen repeated attacks and kidnappings by armed groups.
Authorities confirmed the incident and acknowledged casualties, though official figures are still being verified. Residents reported that 17 people were killed and several others injured.
According to witnesses, the attackers arrived in the late afternoon and opened fire across the village, causing panic. After the gunmen left, residents searched for victims.
The state governor blamed suspected armed herders for the attack.
The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in central Nigeria, where clashes over land and limited security presence continue to fuel violence.
