At least 17 farmers were killed and 13 others injured after unidentified gunmen attacked agricultural workers in northwestern Nigeria, local officials and residents said on Saturday.
The attack took place on Friday in the town of Gurun Namaye, located in the Maradun area of Zamfara State. No group has claimed responsibility for the assault.
According to local residents, the farmers were working in their fields when armed men launched a sudden attack. The injured victims are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
Maradun local government chairman Sanusi Dosara linked the violence to ongoing tensions between authorities and armed groups, calling on security forces to dismantle militant hideouts in the region's forests.
The incident came a day after 39 people were reportedly abducted in another community in Maradun during a meeting aimed at discussing peace efforts and addressing a wave of kidnappings.
Northwest Nigeria has witnessed a surge in attacks, kidnappings, and armed violence in recent years, posing a major security challenge for authorities.
