At least 16 workers have died and several more are feared trapped after a crane collapsed during construction of a bridge in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, officials said.

Television footage showed the wreckage of a crane lying on the ground between the pillars of the bridge near Shahapur district, about 80 km from Mumbai, the state capital.

Mohsin Shahidi, a senior official in the National Disaster Response Force, said rescue teams were trying to recover bodies and that at least 16 deaths had been recorded.

"Should by the tragedy in Shahapur, Maharashtra state. My deepest condolences to the families of the deceased," Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office said in a post on Twitter.

Modi's office announced relief aid of 200,000 rupees ($2,430) for the families of each of the deceased and 50,000 rupees ($608) for each of the injured.
