At least 16 people were killed when severe weather battered parts of Missouri and Kentucky as of Friday through Saturday morning, US authorities said, according to NBC News.
Laurel County Sheriff John Root said nine people were killed and many more were seriously injured. He added that a tornado struck the area late Friday night, and the search for survivors is ongoing.
Officials said five people were killed in St. Louis and two others in Scott County in southeast Missouri.
In an evening press conference, officials in St. Louis said more than 5,000 homes may have been affected by the severe weather in the afternoon.
