At least 16 people have died in India after an intense heatwave swept across the southern state of Telangana, prompting health warnings and emergency alerts from local authorities.

Temperatures have recently exceeded 45 degrees Celsius in several Indian cities as extreme heat conditions intensify across the country.

Telangana Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy called for a state-wide emergency response, warning that the heat had reached unprecedented levels.

Officials urged elderly people, children, and pregnant women to avoid going outdoors during daytime hours unless absolutely necessary.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast above-normal temperatures and severe heatwaves in multiple regions, with unusually high nighttime temperatures worsening conditions.

Scientists have repeatedly warned that climate change is making heatwaves in India longer, more frequent, and more intense.
