At least 16 civilians were tragically killed in a botched airstrike by the Nigerian military, which was intended to target criminal gangs in the northwest region of the country.
The strike occurred in Zamfara State on Saturday and has drawn significant concern from local witnesses and human rights advocates.
The incident unfolded when a military aircraft, aiming to hit criminal elements terrorizing the area, mistakenly bombed a group of civilians.
According to local sources, the civilians had gathered from nearby villages to counter the attacks of heavily armed bandits who had recently raided Dangebe village, stealing livestock, burning homes, and causing widespread destruction.
Said Ibrahim, a resident, described the situation, stating that the civilians were returning to their villages after defending Dangebe when the fighter jet struck.
Ibrahim noted that 16 bodies were recovered and several others with sever injuries were rushed to the hospital.
