The collapse of a residential building in Douala, the economic capital of Cameroon, left at least 16 dead and five injured, according to a preliminary toll announced by a civil protection official.

A 4-storey building in northern Douala collapsed on another one-storey residential building at around 1:00 am of Saturday-Sunday, according to a senior civil protection official

Rescuers were searching through the wreckage for survivors.

“The situation is under control and firefighters are working to ensure no one remains under the rubble,” said Littoral region governor Samuel Dieudonne Ivaha Diboua, who visited the site of the collapse.
