At least 16 people were killed and 30 others injured in two separate traffic accidents in southern Turkey, authorities said on Sunday.
A passenger bus crashed in the major tourist city of Antalya, resulting in nine fatalities, including the driver, according to Antalya Governor Hulusi Sahin. Earlier reports had placed the death toll at eight, with 25 injured.
The bus, carrying 34 passengers from Tekirdag in western Turkey to Antalya, overturned at around 10:20 a.m. local time after skidding on a rain-soaked highway. Governor Sahin said poor weather conditions, including heavy rain and fog, contributed to the accident.
“There was also fog. It is a bend that requires caution, and it appears the bus entered at excessive speed,” Sahin said. Seven of the injured were reported to be in critical condition. Authorities did not confirm whether any foreign nationals were among the victims.
In a separate incident in Burdur province, on the highway linking Antalya and Isparta, seven people were killed and five others injured, according to DHA news agency.
The Antalya region, located on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, attracts large numbers of domestic and international tourists throughout the year, increasing traffic volume on major highways.
