The Lebanese army said that its units have arrested 16 people in the governorates of Akkar and the North (Northern Lebanon) for their involvement in smuggling people by sea.
And the Lebanese army confirmed, in a statement today, Thursday, that the recent arrests came in the context of combating people-smuggling operations by sea.
An army force carried out a raid on the homes of wanted persons in the towns of Benin, Akkar, and Al-Mina, in Tripoli, the capital of northern Lebanon, where they arrested 16 people.
The Lebanese army added that the force seized the accused in their possession of military weapons, ammunition, and military equipment, which were handed over to the competent authorities that initiated the investigations.
Lebanon and other Arab countries bordering the Mediterranean are facing challenges related to confronting attempts to smuggle people toward Europe in recent years.
