At least 15 people were killed in a drone strike on a border town in Chad late Wednesday, with local sources saying the attack originated from neighboring Sudan.

The strike hit the town of Tineh during a funeral, according to local officials, raising the death toll to between 15 and 16 victims. A military source told Agence France-Presse that 16 people were killed in the attack, which was allegedly carried out by the Rapid Support Forces.

However, the paramilitary group denied responsibility in a statement on Telegram, blaming the Sudanese Armed Forces, its rival in the ongoing civil war.

The incident underscores growing regional instability as the conflict in Sudan continues to spill across borders. Despite Chad closing its border with Sudan in late February due to repeated incursions by armed groups, violence has persisted. A separate rocket strike earlier that month also caused damage in Tineh.

The wider conflict, which began in April 2023 between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese army, has devastated large parts of the country, particularly the Darfur region, now largely under RSF control.

The war has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced more than 13 million, triggering what the United Nations describes as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
