Today, Saturday, the Togolese army announced that several civilians were killed and others injured in an armed attack on villages in the far north of the country.
The government had already reported the attack between Thursday night and Friday in the Kpendjal Prefecture regions, without giving details about the casualties.
The army noted that militants carried out simultaneous and complex raids on several villages in the area, according to "AFP".
The army said in a statement that the attack led to many deaths and a limited number of injured, who received care from the first elements of the armed forces that arrived.
Local media reported that 10 to 15 people were killed in the attack.
This is the fourth attack in Togo since last year, as the West African nation and the rest of the coastal states, Benin, Ghana, and Ivory Coast face a growing threat from extremist groups in the Sahel region north of its borders.
In May, 8 Togolese army soldiers were killed and 13 injured in an attack by extremists in the north of the country.
