At least 15 people were killed in an armed attack in central Nigeria, the latest episode of violence to hit Benue State, according to local authorities and a security report.
Suspected armed herders attacked Sai village in the Mbagir district of Katsina-Ala in the early hours of Wednesday, killing more than 15 residents and injuring several others, including women and children, according to a report prepared for the United Nations.
Residents said the attackers stormed the community while villagers were asleep, while local officials reported differing casualty figures, with some putting the death toll at six and the number of injured at 13.
Benue, located in Nigeria's Middle Belt region, has long been plagued by clashes between farmers and herders, as well as kidnappings carried out by criminal gangs
