At least 15 people were killed and several others injured in a stampede during the Kumbh Mela, a massive Hindu pilgrimage festival, in Prayagraj, northern India, on Wednesday.
The Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, attracting tens of millions of devotees from India and beyond.
Pilgrims participate in ritual baths at the sacred confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers, believing it cleanses them of sins.
A doctor at the on-site medical camp, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that at least 15 bodies had been received so far. However, authorities have yet to release official figures.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, offering "deepest sympathies" to the families of the victims.
According to eyewitnesses, the stampede occurred around midnight as thousands of devotees rushed toward the riverbanks for the most significant bathing ritual of the festival.
