At least fifteen people, most of them children, have died after a boat capsized in Lake Volta in northeastern Ghana, according to the country’s maritime authorities.

The Ghana Maritime Authority confirmed in an official statement that eleven of the victims were children aged between two and fourteen, including five boys and six girls. The tragedy occurred on Saturday in Lake Volta, located in the Oti Region.

The statement said the passengers were traveling from Okuma to Bofem when their boat overturned. Four adults survived the incident. Authorities described the sinking as a serious and unacceptable violation of safety standards.

A specialized investigation team has been dispatched to determine the cause of the accident. Preliminary findings indicate that the vessel was overloaded beyond its permitted capacity.

The Maritime Authority announced that it would establish a high-level investigative committee in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and conduct a continuous safety enforcement operation along the lake.

The measures aim to ensure that boats comply with passenger limits and that all occupants wear life jackets.
