At least 14 people have died and more than 400 others have been displaced after heavy rainfall triggered severe flooding and landslides in Brazil’s Minas Gerais state, authorities confirmed Tuesday.
Local officials said the intense storms struck parts of the southeastern state, causing rivers to overflow and destabilizing hillsides. The city government of Juiz de Fora reported on social media platform X that an unspecified number of people remain missing following the extreme weather.
Emergency crews have been deployed to affected areas as search and rescue operations continue. Authorities are working to assist displaced families and assess the extent of the damage to homes, roads, and infrastructure.
Minas Gerais has frequently experienced severe weather events in recent years, with heavy rains leading to flash floods and deadly landslides, particularly in urban areas built near vulnerable slopes and riverbanks.
Officials have urged residents in high-risk zones to remain alert as meteorological services monitor ongoing rainfall. Further updates are expected as rescue teams continue efforts to locate missing individuals and provide humanitarian assistance.
