Brazilian authorities have announced a tragic toll from traffic accidents that occurred during the 2026 Carnival celebrations, with 130 people killed in a series of devastating crashes across major highways linking key states.
According to a report issued by the Polícia Rodoviária Federal (PRF), the festive period saw a sharp rise in serious road accidents despite extensive awareness campaigns and heightened security measures implemented ahead of the nationwide celebrations.
Preliminary data indicate that the main causes of the deadly incidents included excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking in high-risk areas, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
These factors led to severe collisions and the overturning of several vehicles, including tourist buses transporting Carnival revelers.
The busiest states, including Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Minas Gerais, experienced immense pressure on their road networks, recording the highest numbers of fatalities and critical injuries.
Emergency and civil defense teams responded to hundreds of calls around the clock, though the severity of some crashes made rescue efforts extremely difficult.
Human rights associations and road safety organizations expressed deep concern over the figures, calling for a comprehensive review of traffic safety measures during major national events.
Experts stressed that reckless behavior remains the greatest challenge for authorities, especially amid the millions of people traveling across Brazil during the annual Carnival season.
The tragedy has cast a shadow of sorrow over the country, as return trips from Carnival turned into scenes of mourning for dozens of families, reigniting debate over the need for stricter penalties to curb dangerous driving and prevent future national tragedies.
