Thirteen people were killed Monday in a highway crash involving a small truck and a larger lorry in the Arequipa region of southern Peru, local authorities confirmed.

Regional public health official Walter Oburto reported 13 fatalities, with five others injured and transported to a medical facility. Local media noted that the drivers of both vehicles also died in the collision, which occurred near the small town of San Antonio de Chuca, over 1,100 kilometers (685 miles) from Lima.

Authorities said the larger truck was carrying Brazilian license plates. So far, two victims have been identified, and investigators are probing the cause of the crash.

Road accidents remain a major concern in Peru, with official figures recording more than 3,000 deaths on the nation’s roads last year.
