Thirteen people have been confirmed dead following devastating landslides on the popular tourist island of Phuket, Thailand, authorities announced on Sunday.
The tragic incident, which occurred after a week of heavy rainfall, prompted the suspension of search operations for those initially reported missing.
Phuket Governor Narong Woonciew stated that the torrential rains triggered landslides near the Big Buddha statue, a well-known tourist attraction in southern Thailand.
In addition to the fatalities, around 20 people sustained injuries, and 209 households were affected by the disaster.
Governor Woonciew also noted that extensive cleanup efforts are currently underway to clear the debris left behind by the landslides.
Authorities are in contact with the victims' families and their respective embassies to provide necessary support.
Phuket, known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant tourism industry, has been severely impacted by extreme weather conditions.
The landslides serve as a stark reminder of the region's vulnerability to natural disasters, particularly during the monsoon season.
