Under the folk-inspired slogan "Egypt is a Story... 12 Years Are Not Enough," the Ezbet Hamada district in Matareya celebrated the 12th anniversary of its legendary annual Iftar today. Far more than a communal meal, the event transformed into a massive demonstration of Egyptian heritage and organizational brilliance, shattering all previous records.
A Masterclass in Grassroots Organization
Behind this global spectacle stood a dedicated team that has earned a permanent place in the hearts of the community. Led by organizers Ahmed Abu Islam, Alaa Keika, and Ayman Magdy, along with a tireless field crew, the team managed the logistics of 24 streets with the precision of a world-class hotel. Their efforts allowed the neighborhood to host thousands of guests simultaneously in a seamless, organized fashion.
The "Great Culinary Epic"
In the event’s massive communal kitchen, Chef Ahmed Akram directed a culinary marathon to prepare and distribute 100,000 Iftar meals. The staggering scale of "Akram’s Kitchen" included:
7 tons of meat and poultry.
4 tons of basmati rice.
370 kg of specialty spices and flavorings.
250 kg of assorted Oriental sweets.
To complement the feast, the neighborhood was transformed into an open-air art gallery. The creative touches of artist Ahmed Zabadi adorned every corner and alleyway across the 24 streets, providing a stunning visual identity that captivated international news agencies.
A Tapestry of National Unity
In a profound display of Egypt’s "single fabric," the role of "Uncle Zakaria the Copt" stood out. He was responsible for preparing the Lenten Iftar meals specifically for Christian neighbors participating in the event. This gesture completed the portrait of national unity under the Matareya sky, reaffirming the local proverb that "the neighbor comes before the house" and that the Egyptian table always has room for everyone.
A Promise for the Future
Twelve years since its inception, the people of Matareya continue to prove that their story is far from over. The slogan "12 Years Are Not Enough" serves as a solemn promise to continue this tradition of generosity, ensuring that Ezbet Hamada remains the "Beating Heart of Egypt" and a global symbol of hospitality during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
