At least 12 police officers were killed and eight others injured after a suicide bombing targeted a police checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan near the Afghan border.

According to local police, the attack took place late Saturday in the Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa when a suicide bomber detonated a vehicle packed with explosives close to the security post.

The powerful blast completely destroyed the checkpoint building, trapping dozens of officers and personnel beneath the rubble.

Security officials reported that intense clashes erupted immediately after the explosion between armed militants and Pakistani security forces, continuing for more than two hours.

The attackers reportedly used machine guns and drones during the assault, highlighting the growing sophistication of militant operations in the region.

Emergency authorities declared a state of maximum alert across hospitals in the area, while several wounded officers were transferred to intensive care units due to the severity of their injuries.

Officials warned that the death toll could rise further as some of the injured remain in critical condition.

No group has officially claimed responsibility for the attack so far. However, security analysts suspect the assault may have been carried out by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan or allied militant factions amid a recent surge in attacks targeting security forces along Pakistan’s border regions.
