A devastating fire at a nursing home in western Sri Lanka has killed 12 people and injured eight others, authorities said.
The blaze broke out late Wednesday at a care facility in Anguruwatota, which housed elderly residents, including patients with mental health conditions, complicating evacuation efforts.
Rescue teams managed to evacuate around 51 residents from the burning building, while emergency crews continued searches to ensure no one remained trapped after the fire was brought under control.
Police spokesperson Frederick Wootler said preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have originated within the facility, although the exact cause remains under investigation.
Authorities have detained the nursing home director on suspicion of negligence. A court ordered the suspect held for one week pending further inquiries.
Sri Lankan officials said a full investigation is underway and pledged to review safety standards at care homes nationwide to prevent similar tragedies.
